Essential Email hygene
Jun 13, 2021Over the last 5 days our electric power has been out due to a storm that brought down thousands of trees, powerlines and brought widespread flooding.
When your electricity is out in the middle of winter (Southern Hemisphere) your personal hygene can take a hit as who wants to take a cold shower and then face the day without any space heating?🚿
But that's not the only hygene issue I had this week.
I also had an email hygene problem.
I discovered that some of my emails had been going to a spam trap.
What is a Spam Trap?
Spam Traps are a tool used to catch spammers from sending unwanted content.
A spam trap will look like a legitimate email address, but it doesn't belong to a real person. This means they cannot be used for any kind of communication and cannot opt-in to any mailing lists. Long story short, I wasn't doing a good job at maintaining a healthy email list.
This didn't occur on my Launch with Kajabi site, but one another website where I operate a quiz that people sometimes want to complete, but sometimes want to do so secretly. They can therefore sometimes use illigitimate or old email addresses. An old and abandoned email address or one scraped from somewhere else could be the cause.
And compounding this problem, the form that was embedded in that quiz was not using double optin.
Ignore Double-Op-In At Your Own Risk.
So before I get to the hygene side to clean your list up, be warned that there is a risk of not using double optin. I do both, and on this occassion choosing not to use double-opt-in has come back to bite me.
Och!
Now you've been warned.
Good Email Hygene in Kajabi
So what can you do to maintain good hygene?
Run the following query freuqently on your email list:
These are the steps:
- Go to PEOPLE in your Kajabi menu
- Select FILTERS
- In CATEGORY add EMAIL ACTIVITY, under CONDITION add WAS DELIVERED, under VALUE add 90 DAYS.
- CLICK ADD FILTER
- In CATEGORY add EMAIL ACTIVITY, under CONDITION add WAS NOT OPENED, under VALUE add 90 DAYS.
- CLICK ADD FILTER
- In CATEGORY add EMAIL ACTIVITY, under CONDITION add WAS NOT CLICKED, under VALUE add 90 DAYS.
- CLICK ADD FILTER
- In CATEGORY add PEOPLE, under CONDITION add IS MEMBER, under VALUE add NO.
- CLICK APPLY FILTER
- Now at the top left click the box next to where it says DISPLAYING 1 TO X CONTACTS (where x is the number in your filtered list)
- A drop down will appear that says BULK ACTIONS. Scroll to the bottom and click UNSUBSCRIBE. Complete the confirmation and you are done.
How often should you do this?
It depends.
- It depends on how secretive your niche is and prone to using 'fake emails'
- depends on how many optins you are getting each month and the source
- But mostly it depends on whether you are using double-opt-in on your forms.
If you are using double-opt-in, then once a month is a good frequency, but less often may be ok as well.
If you are not using double-opt-in, then you might like to consider monitoring this query result on a weekly basis.
So today I got two hygene issues sorted. I had a hot shower for the first time in days and I improved the hygene of my email list.
happy scrubbing people. 🧼
