Process Step 4 - Getting Traffic

Now you should have your funnel setup ... if you don't, go back to Process Step 3 and set it up before reading any more of this.  Make sure you get the funnel flow diagram for setting it up in Kajabi too!

So then ...

Having a shinny new funnel is great, but how do you get traffic to it?

The is a HUGE topic, so I can only scratch the surface.

Broadly speaking there are two types:

  1. free (organic), and
  2. paid (eg ads, or sales consultant, telemarketer etc)

Which should you do?

Organic or Paid

Over the long term, both.

I'll go over both briefly, so read on with some extra bonus info about SEO and Google Search Console.

Organic Traffic

Building organic is a really a longer term strategy that you should definitely put effort into, but it takes time and can be way slower than you think.  So do it, but be patient.

What you are reading right now is part of an organic strategy.

I could have put all this great info about launching your online business in my emails, but by having it online (with links in my emails) growths my organic traffic.

So, organic strategy #1 is:

  1. You have signups from your freebie you now get emails
  2. write articles for your blog that add value to your freebie
  3. make sure your articles are rich in the keywords you want to target
  4. put links into your emails to send email traffic to your blog
  5. also share your blog articles on SM, with affiliates, masterminds etc
  6. link your articles so that they reference each other and provide your readers with more value to keep them on your blog longer
  7. ask others to check out your article, and if they like it, ask them to add links to it.  These help improve your SEO performance.

Organic strategy #2

  1. Write one long article that is central to what you're avatar wants to achieve.  Make it at least 2,000 to 2,500 words, but break it up and add pictures ad diagrams so that it isn't just boring text
  2. Write other articles that are related to the main post, and link them together.  This helps keep people on your site as they explore more content.  Through cookies (not covered here), you will also be able to see what subjects people are most interested in.  These will provide your with more content and even offer ideas.
  3. Make sure your content is Keyword rich for your avatar and niche. A free tool called Ubersuggest is quite a good way to discover new keywords and how easy or hard it is to rate for them.

RABBIT HOLE: Google Search Consol

There are a lot of things to do to boost your SEO performance.  One of those is to submit your sitemap.xml to Google Search Console

Google Search Console is easy to use and Google give pretty clear instructions.

  1. create an account
  2. submit your URL
  3. copy the TXT record to verify your domain and add it into CloudFlare DNS records, or use the URL method is that fails (The URL method is a good choice if you aren't using a custom domain.  Make sure you have Google Tag Manager setup on your site, and Google Search will use that to verify your domain.)
  4. Go to the Google Search Console property
  5. Click on Sitemap and at the end of the url, type in 'sitemap.xml'

Google will schedule your page to be 'crawled' (examined) which will improve search results because it will search for keywords.

Take note of any critical errors it comes up with and correct them as best you can to improve long-term SEO results.

There are as many organic strategies as there are hairs on my head (no, I'm not bald!), but those are to you can start with.

What ever strategy you use, it needs to provide real VALUE and build their TRUST that you know what you are doing and can offer more.

then we come to paid traffic

Paid Traffic

Paid traffic options are even more numerous, and it doesn't do any harm to do a few and see it as an investment in your education.  It will normally take some experience to get good at paid traffic, but it is time and money well spent even if you ultimately will pay someone else to manage your paid traffic for you.

First, go back to your earlier work and look at what you discovered about your avatar.

  • where do they hand out for business and for pleasure?
  • what are they interested in?
  • what do they search for?
  • what devices do they use?
  • what are their demographics?
  • what specific 'thing' is going to get their attention?

Use this information to develop a paid traffic marketing strategy

However, as I've already said, make sure you have a well developed funnel before sending paid traffic to it.

Here are a few check items:

  • You should know where to find your avatar
  • You should have worked out what the value of a paying customer is once they get through your funnel.  That's why it's good to send traffic through a funnel that has a purchase or two through it or at the end.  Knowing the customer value will enable you to decide whether your traffic costs are sustainable or not.
  • You should decide a budget, start small and measure results
  • Not until you know what is a good and bad result should you look to hire others to manage your ad spend for you.

At the end of the day, your goal is to build sustainable and economic channels of traffic that will return many times the revenue of what you spend on paid traffic.

So what's next?

Your avatar doesn't just come and buy one thing and then leave.  That one thing is not going to solve all their issues.  Your job is to take them on a journey where you will provide many more solutions to many more problems.

So up next, we look at mapping out your avatar's journey.
